Grey Tiger Books’ new illustrated English translation of Jean Genet’s L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti is intended as a (part-posthumous) collaborative enterprise between successive generations of highly talented French/English artists/writers. Jean Genet and Alberto Giacometti became friends in the 1950’s. Genet posed for 3 paintings and 4 drawings by Giacometti and, whilst in the studio, had leisure to observe the artist at work. This resulting essay is a rare opportunity to observe two of the great creative minds of the last century. In this new English translation, translator Phil King (b. 1967) brings his exhaustive knowledge of the French literary/intellectual tradition, and his precise nose for nuance, to Genet’s text. He has a Fine Art MA from Goldsmiths’ College, and has written on art and French literature and thought, with a focus on ‘desire’. He finished a translation of André Gide’s Le Traité du Narcisse for his own amusement.
