German art is presented in a completely new light in 2015 by the curator and head of Museum Folkwang’s photographic collection, Florian Ebner, together with Berlin-based artists Hito Steyerl, Olaf Nicolai and Tobias Zielony, and artist couple Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk, who live in Cairo.
Classic questions of representation — the power relationships between subject and object and the old asymmetry between photographer and model — are readjusted in light of the advent of digital images. A contemporary understanding of the ‘photographic’ as a central position in documentary work is discussed.
Published alongside the German Pavilion exhibit at the Venice Biennial 2015.
