Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to present Excitations, a group show that deals with color, patterning, and articulations of line that cause visual buzzes and hums. This exhibition inaugurates the first floor of the gallery's new 558 West 21st Street location with a vibrational energy that resonates throughout the triangular space.
In Untitled
(Rainbow), 2005, Peter Coffin has installed a new large-scale
wall collage of found images. Slow Birth, 2004 continues Jessica
Dickinson's investigation of building numerous layers and erasures of
oil on a limestone polymer ground that embody the movements, boundaries, and
fissures between inner self and exterior world. Lorenzo de los Angeles
is represented by 3 drawings: Passiflora Incarnata, 2003, Hearts,
2002-2003, and Spaghetti, 2004. His sources of inspiration include
the decorative arts, botanical illustration and early influences from his
father's medical and pharmacology books he perused as a child. In Martha
Friedmanís new sculpture entitled Nails, 2005 six over-sized
aluminum nails are stacked and balanced on the head of a seventh, reflecting
the artistís practice of replicating commonplace objects and arranging them
in precariously balanced structures that suggest alternately accessible logic
and latent anxiety. Xylor Jane's Lee Shore, 2005, which is
drawn with marker directly on the wall, is built with Fibonacci dimensions
and the seven colors of the rainbow, causing a vivid retinal vibration. In
Fall Line, 2005 Michael Mahalchick reinvigorates everything
from children's casual wear to women's formal wear in a new work which examines
the classic forms of line and color as it relates to the body and architecture.
Suggestive and alluring Mahalchick's Fall Line asks the question:
"How do I look?" to which it answers, "You look up!"
Dave Muller's Step Inside My Mind (Cloud) - XDMX, is an iMac
with all of the artist's mp3s (220+ gigs as of July) playing at random. Using
a transmitter, Muller creates a mini radio station (radius: 30-60 feet) and
employs 3 radios, tuned to his station's frequency and installed in various
points throughout the space. The songs are listed in a 1038 page book that
accompanies the piece. Larry Mantello's Bait, 2005 contains
buttons with various slogans, fabric flowers, small fabric roosters, and a
variety of other found ephemera mounted to a boogie board to create a shrine-like
wall sculpture. Both Eileen Quinlan and Halsey Rodman
are interested in ways of picturing various forms of temporal events. Quinlan's
photos suggest several interpretations involving materiality, accumulation,
alchemy, fragmentation, surface, proximity, transitivity, retinal stains,
illusionism, representation, intoxication, and science. Rodman's three-part
installation started with a drawing of a mysterious substance emanating from
a pool of water. Dealing with various states of solidity and transparency,
Rodman's drawing transistions to sculpture, and also into the sculpture's
three-dimensional shadow, resulting in a bright yellow bench installed on
the gallery floor.
Excitations is the first show in a multi-part project titled Etc.,
arranged by Matt Keegan. Etc. will consist of a series of group shows, performances,
lectures, screenings, and panel discussions to be held at Andrew Kreps Gallery
in the coming months. The first event will be a live light show performed
by Lorenzo de los Angeles and Adam Putnam on September 24th. Future events
TBA.
The exhibition will be on view from September 15th to October 8th, 2005. A
reception will be held for the artists in the gallery on September 15th from
